About Me

Hey, my name is Dave aka Mr. NYBudget.

I started this blog after reading a comment on a forum. Someone posted that “unless you want to be stuck eating Ramen every day, you need to make at least $80k per year to live in New York City”.

I was stunned. For the past 6 years, I have lived extraordinarily well in NYC, getting the best out of one of the best cities in the world. I have never felt as though I was sacrificing happiness and I have been living off of closer to $25k per year (while investing and saving the rest of my income).

As I have progressed in my career, my salary has increased, so I have been able to invest the difference and have never been happier.

With this blog, I want to share the ways I have cut expenses that don’t affect your happiness and priorities as well as show ways to spend, invest, and explore this great city to maximize your experience here!

For those of you in other parts of the world, I like to think the vast majority of my posts are relevant regardless of your location.

So poke around. Have fun. And most of all, contact me with any questions you may have!

I can definitely say that aside from housing, NYC is really affordable. There is so much free and cheap food and entertainment!

That’s true! There are also some ways to save on housing as well, which I plan on going over at some point. Thanks for stopping by!

I think this is a great idea! I’ll be interested too see if we come up with any similar ideas. I’m in a high cost of living area myself (who wants to own a home anyways?!) on the West Coast but you never know!

Thanks Elle! It was a lot of fun making that video – and yeah, if you ever visit your brother, let me know – we have meetups here from time to time!

I love the site Dave. I will feature it on an upcoming post on my site as the personal finance blog of the week! Any thoughts of a podcast in the future?

Thanks Doug! No podcast in the immediate future, but I have definitely been kicking around the idea!
